Gaboriau's MONSIEUR LECOQ is, after Paul Féval's JOHN DEVIL and BLACK COATS saga, the founding stone of the modern detective novel. Unlike Féval, who was more interested in the criminals, Gaboriau (once Féval's secretary) decided to focus on the police, and created the character of Lecoq, a crafty Sureté inspector.
MONSIEUR LECOQ is chonologically the first of Lecoq's investigations, but the last novel to be written in the series. In addition to its thrilling battle of wits between sleuth and suspect, it is also the dramatic tale of three powerful families trapped in a web of political intrigue and murder during the troubled times that followed the fall of Napoleon and the restoration of the French Monarchy. It is arguably Gaboriau's masterpiece.
This is an entirely new translation by scholar Nina Cooper, which also includes a fictional biography of Lecoq by Rick Lai. The cover is by Patrick Dumas.
