Ponson du Terrail is better known for his ROCAMBOLE novels, but this gothic thriller written in 1852, early in his career (his second novel, I think) is fascinating on several levels.
First, it's one of those books where you truly never know what is real and what is not. I'd dare say it's the first "mindfuck" novel.
Second, the horror scenes, whether using the female vampire or the Black Hunstman, are terrific, in a Hammer Film sort of way.
Third, the plotting is exceedingly clever, and Stableford adds yet another layer by providing a superior explanaytion of the whole novel that makes it even more clever.
It really is a unique breakthrough novel.
the cover is by talented French artist Nathalie Lial. |
