Our September release is quite interesting. It's long a slim novel or a log novella entitled CAPTAIN VAMPIRE that was written in 1879 (quite before DRACULA) by... a 19-year-old young woman called Marie Nizet. (She then married, had kids & forgot all about writing, which is a shame.,)
The text was completely forgotten in France until it was recently rediscovered by a Rumanian scholar Matei Cazacu, which claimed it influenced Stoker, but I don't think so.
CAPTAIN VAMPIRE, like the three Paul Feval novels we published, is (or should be) a foundation stone of vampire literature. In a nutshell, Liatoukine, the eponymous protagonist (who is the villain of the piece) is a walking undead Russian Cossack warrior, a dashing but sinister and cruel figure, who preys on women. He is more like a young Dracula than the Stoker character.
CAPTAIN VAMPIRE has been translated and annotated by Brian Stableford with its usual thoroughness. |
